Social Enterprise Development

How do we make Non Profit Organisations or Social Enterprises (SocE’s) make a bigger impact in the region? These SocE’s do exist, driven by passionate people that want to make a difference, but need capacity building to improve their performance? Where to from here?

Social Venture Capital and its Contribution to Economic Growth

Social Enterprise Development is a relatively new concept in South Africa, with a wider range and larger group of beneficiaries to be serviced. However, some social ventures and more particularly Social Entrepreneurs have been running successful organisations over many years and certainly have lessons to share with similar ventures.

Sadly, the fruits of our strong economic performance over the last 12 years have not translated into a better quality of life for all South Africans. We are increasingly questioning conventional solutions to some of our intractable social problems. The current business models tend to favour the rich and marginalize the poor even further. This is most notable where relatively rich areas or countries become increasingly richer, and the poor suffer even bigger hardships.

The government’s capacity to provide solutions and funding is well intended but in isolation, is limited and government alone cannot address the problem. The private sector and other interested groups need to be engaged to assist in creating an empowered environment where social enterprise can reach their full potential in servicing the identified social needs.
